The "Language Studies" major is offered to students in the Diploma in Language Studies. The Language Studies major awards students a broader, composite language learning specialisation, comprising up to two language areas including contextual language studies.

Specialisation Structure

You must complete 48 UOC.

Language Placement Questionnaire 

All students are required to complete a School Language Placement Questionnaire to determine language knowledge level and are advised in consultation with the Program Director on the remaining courses to be completed on admission.

DFAT students only

All students completing the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Language Training Services program will be assessed on admission for their language knowledge level and advised on the remaining courses to be completed.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will be based on the number of training weeks completed. The Language Studies major comprises 48 UOC. Students will be required to complete a minimum of 12 UOC at UNSW, i.e. minimum two additional language or contextual language courses. Course prerequisites still apply. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be applied for up to 36 UOC.

Language Placement Information

The School of Humanities and Languages offers a flexible program for students with different interests, different language backgrounds, and different language levels. 

If you have prior language knowledge you will need to take an online placement evaluation so that we can assess your skills and select an appropriate level of course for you. You will not be permitted to enrol in language courses that are too easy for you. If this occurs, you will be requested to change your enrolment.
