Overview

The Medicine/Arts program is an alternative program of study in which, over a 7 or 8 year period, a student may complete the degree of Bachelor of Arts, together with the degrees of Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine. In order to complete the combined program in 7 years, students are required to undertake an approved arts-focused Independent Learning Project as well as to complete an additional Arts course above the normal Semester load (24 UOC) in at least one Semester. All other students will require 8 years to complete the combined program. Students who wish to undertake the program should contact the Medicine Education and Student Office during Year 1 in order to apply to transfer from the Medicine 3805 program to Medicine/Arts 3856 at the end of year 1.

Double Degree Structure
372 Units of Credit:

Students must complete 372 UOC.

Over a period of 7 or 8 years, students will be required to fulfil the requirements of the BMed/MD degree program as well as 96 units of credit in courses offered by the Schools/Departments/Programs within the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. This includes a home major stream of 60 UOC, a minor stream of 24 UOC and Arts and Social Sciences prescribed Electives of 12 UOC.

Optional External Minors
3409 - Arts

External Minors

If you are enrolled in a double degree program, you cannot complete a minor stream in the same Faculty as your second program of study e.g. students enrolled in the BA/BArt Theory, cannot complete an external minor in Art History and Theory.

You will need to take extra UOC over 96 UOC to meet the requirements of an external minor that is greater than 24 UOC. External majors are not available in double degree programs.

You must complete 12 UOC of any courses offered by UNSW Arts and Social Sciences. Indigenous Studies courses (ATSIxxxx) cannot be studied as Arts and Social Sciences Prescribed Electives.

Independent Learning Project (ILP)

Academic Writing & Language Enhancement
3409 - Arts

ARTS2050 Academic Writing for the Humanities (6 UOC) and HUMS1005 Personalised English Language Enhancement (6 UOC) can be counted as UNSW Arts and Social Sciences Prescribed Electives or Free Electives.

Double Majors
3409 - Arts

Double majors are not available in Double Degrees.

Maturity Requirements
3409 - Arts

You must have completed 24 UOC before taking any Level 2 courses.You must have completed 48 UOC, including 6 UOC at Level 1 and 6 UOC at Level 2 in your major/minor before taking any Level 3 courses.

Specialisation Declaration

You must specify your major and minor at the time of enrolment in Level 2 courses.
