Overview

The Bachelor of Arts (UNSW BA) is designed to provide you with all the benefits of an education in the Humanities, Social Sciences and the Creative and Performing Arts. If you study in either the single or dual mode, you will complete: a home major of 60 UOC (ten courses) selected from the list of UNSW BA approved home major specialisations;a minor specialisation of 24 UOC (four courses) selected from the list of UNSW BA approved home and external major specialisations or dedicated minor specialisations;12 UOC Prescribed Electives (two courses) of any other courses offered from within UNSW Arts and Social Sciences. If you study in single mode, you will also complete: an additional 12 UOC (two courses) of UNSW Arts and Social Sciences Prescribed Electives;24 UOC of Free Electives (four courses) which can be taken within or outside of UNSW Arts and Social Sciences;12 UOC of General Education (two courses) which must be taken outside of UNSW Arts and Social Sciences. You can use your elective and General Education courses to upgrade your minor to another full major specialisation in the single degree and graduate with a double major.

Program Structure
144 Units of Credit:

Students must complete 144 UOC as a standalone program.

  1. A home major specialisation (60 UOC)
  2. At least a minor specialisation (24 UOC)*
  3. Arts and Social Sciences Prescribed Electives (24 UOC)
  4. Free Electives (24 UOC)
  5. General Education (12 UOC)

*Some external minors may be greater than 24 UOC

Home Majors and Minors

You are required to complete one Home Major and one Minor in order to graduate.

If you are enrolled in the single degree, you can use your free electives and general education to upgrade your required minor stream to a major stream and graduate with a double major.

This second major stream can be taken from within Arts and Social Sciences or from a list of approved "External Majors" offered in the BA from outside of Arts and Social Sciences.

The General Education requirement is met if you complete an external major or minor (for example, Economics).

Language Studies for Students Commencing in T3

If your language skills are assessed as Level A in Introductory, Intermediate, Advanced or Professional you cannot commence study until Term 1.

Arts and Social Sciences Prescribed Electives

You must complete 24 UOC of any courses offered by UNSW Arts and Social Sciences. Indigenous Studies courses (ATSIxxxx) cannot be studied as Arts and Social Sciences Prescribed Electives.

Free Electives

You must complete 24 UOC of the following courses.

Academic Writing & Language Enhancement

ARTS2050 Academic Writing for the Humanities (6 UOC) and HUMS1005 Personalised English Language Enhancement (6 UOC) can be counted as UNSW Arts and Social Sciences Prescribed Electives or Free Electives.

General Education

You must complete 12 UOC of any courses offered outside UNSW Arts and Social Sciences.

This requirement is met if you complete an external major or minor.

Indigenous Studies courses (ATSIxxxx) can be studied as General Education only if you are not completing a major or minor in Indigenous Studies.

Maturity Requirements

You must have completed 24 UOC before taking any Level 2 courses.You must have completed 48 UOC, including 6 UOC at Level 1 and 6 UOC at Level 2 in your major/minor before taking any Level 3 courses.

Specialisation Declaration

You must specify your major and minor at the time of enrolment in Level 2 courses.
