This program allows you to graduate with both Masters after three years, with students with advanced standing able to complete both degrees up to a year and a half sooner. You may be eligible for up to 72 Units of Credit depending on your background: For the Commerce component, up to 24 Units of Credit may be awarded based on your previous Business studies (at Bachelor level or higher). For the Information Technology component, between 24 and 48 Units of Credit may be awarded: If you have a 4 year software or computer engineering degree or the equivalent, accredited under the Seoul Accord, that includes 1) a final year/capstone design or research project (the equivalent of 2 semesters or 3 terms of study), 2) a project management course, and 3) at least two computing courses covering data structures and algorithms (or work experience with sufficient experience to data structures and algorithms) you will be given 48 Units of CreditIf you have a 4 year software or computer engineering degree or the equivalent, that is not accredited, and includes 1) a final year/capstone design or research project (the equivalent of 2 semesters or 3 terms of study), 2) a project management course, and 3) at least two computing courses covering data structures and algorithms (or work experience with sufficient experience to data structures and algorithms) you will be given 24 Units of CreditIf you have a 3 year Bachelor of Computer Science degree or the equivalent, accredited under the Seoul accord, that includes 1) a final year/capstone design or research project (the equivalent of 2 semesters or 3 terms of study), 2) a project management course, and 3) at least two computing courses covering data structures and algorithms, and 4) three or more years professional work experience in a role such as Software Engineer, Software Developer, Software Architect, Data Analyst, Machine Learning Engineer, Senior Applications Engineer, or Data Engineer you will be given 24 Units of Credit* *Graduates from the UNSW Bachelor of Computer Science will have their credit assessed separately You’ll be notified of the credits in your official letter of offer. The amount of credit awarded will reduce your overall degree duration by up to one and a half years.

Note: In this double degree students take 96 UOC for the Master of Information Technology and 72 UOC for the Master of Commerce, for a total of 168 UOC. Because some postgraduate courses required for both degrees overlap, the total minimum UOC required for the double degree is reduced by 24 UOC to 144 UOC.

Additional Information

Accreditation: The Engineering component of this double degree has the same accreditation status as the Master of Information Technology. For details please see Program 8543

Recognition of Prior Learning restrictions: Students can apply for a maximum of 72 UOC of Advanced Standing - a maximum of 24 UOC in the Commerce component and a maximum of 48 UOC in the Information Technology component

Double Counting: Up to 24 UOC can be double counted towards the requirements of both programs, as follows:

  • COMP9900, COMP9991, COMP9992 or COMP9993 (6 UOC) in the Master of Information Technology (MIT) can be double counted as a Capstone course (6 UOC) in the Master of Commerce (MCom). 
  • GSOE9820 (6 UOC) in the MIT can be double counted as MGMT5050 (6 UOC) in the MCom. 
  • COMM5000 or COMM5501 (6 UOC) in the MCom can be double counted as 6 UOC of Non-Computing Electives in the MIT. 
  • A Specialisation Core or Specialisation Elective course (6 UOC) in the MCom can be double counted as 6 UOC of Non-Computing Electives in the MIT. 

Note: The maximum 12 UOC Non-Computing Electives requirement in the MIT is fulfilled by the double counting rules.
