The UNSW BMedia (C&J) can be completed full-time in Single mode (normally 3 years), or in Dual mode (the equivalent of two years full-time study) or part-time. It has a depth component and a breadth component. If you are enrolled in Single mode you do both the depth and breadth component while in Dual mode you only complete the depth component.

Program Structure
144 Units of Credit:

Students must complete 144 UOC as a standalone program.

Depth Component:

  1. 60 UOC of Communication and Journalism core and prescribed electives
  2. 36 UOC of Media Studies prescribed electives

Breadth Component:

  1. An optional home minor of 24 UOC (four courses)
  2. 12 UOC of Free Electives (two courses)
  3. 12 UOC of General Education (two courses)

OR

  1. An optional external minor of 24-36 UOC (four to six courses) selected from the list of UNSW BA approved external minors*
  2. 12-24 UOC of Free Electives (four courses) including at least 12 UOC taken within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

*An external minor satisfies the 12 UOC of General Education required in the single program.

OR

  1. 12 UOC of Arts & Social Sciences Prescribed Electives (two courses)
  2. 24 UOC of Free Electives (four courses)
  3. 12 UOC of General Education (two courses)

Optional Minors

You may substitute the Prescribed Arts and Social Sciences Electives and/or Free Electives for an optional minor from the list of UNSW BA approved home or external minors.

If you complete an External Minor you will complete 24-36 uoc in the minor and by doing so also meet the 12 uoc General Education requirement of the single program.

You must take 12 UOC of Arts & Social Sciences Prescribed Electives. You can add depth to your program by completing more Communication and Journalism Electives or undertake other courses from other areas of study within the Faculty.

Note: Indigenous Studies courses (ATSIxxxx) cannot be studied as Arts and Social Sciences Prescribed Electives.

Free Electives

You must take 24 UOC of the following courses.

A Free Elective is any course offered either within or outside UNSW Arts and Social Sciences into which you can enrol.

General Education

You must take 12 UOC of General Education courses.

You may substitute 12 UOC General Education courses for 12 UOC in an external minor from the list of UNSW BA approved external minors. This requirement is met if an external minor is completed.

Note: Indigenous Studies courses (ATSIxxxx) can be studied as General Education only if you are not following a minor in Indigenous Studies.

Maturity Requirements

You must have completed 24 UOC before taking any Level 2 courses.

You must have completed 66 UOC before taking any Level 3 courses.

Academic Writing & English Enhancement Courses

ARTS2050 Academic Writing for the Humanities (6 UOC) and HUMS1005 Personalised English Language Enhancement (6 UOC) are recommended. These courses can be counted as Arts and Social Sciences Prescribed Electives or Free Electives.
