The Master of Statistics program is the longest running program of its kind in Australia. Program Structure

Students must complete 72 UOC when taken as a standalone program.

The program consists of:
1. 12 UOC of compulsory Core Coursework Courses
2. 48 UOC of Electives chosen from the School of Mathematics and Statistics
3. 12 UOC of a supervised Research Project

Students must take 12 UOC of the following courses.

MATH5925 Project (12 UOC) in one Term or MATH5005 Project (6 UOC) and MATH5006 Project (6 UOC) over two consecutive Terms (with approval of supervisor).

A WAM of greater than 65 is recommended for MATH5925.
A WAM of greater than 85 is recommended for MATH5005/5006. Students seeking to enrol into a MATH5005/5006 project are required to have the approval of the Director of Postgraduate Studies.

Enrolment into these courses is subject to appropriate research and supervision resources being available

Entry Requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements

The entry requirement for the Master of Statistics is one of the following:

A Bachelor of Mathematics or Bachelor of Science degree with a major in mathematics or statistics; and
Have sufficient mathematical and/or statistical background, as indicated by a minimum weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above in level III mathematics and/or statistics university courses.

Honours graduates in Mathematics or Statistics from UNSW (or equivalent) may receive advanced standing of up to a maximum of 24 UOC and may complete the degree within 48 UOC, or one year of full time study.

The specific advanced standing to be awarded will be determined at the time of admission and will be based on the student's background and previous study.

Progression Requirements

Students usually complete their Research Project during their last one or two Terms. Students are not eligible to start a project until they have completed at least 36 UoC (typically, 6 courses).

Students who have passed 24 UoC can elect to exit the program with a Graduate Certificate (7659).
Students who have passed 48 UoC can elect to exit the program with a Graduate Diploma (5659).
Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate (7659) and have a WAM of 65 may apply to transfer into this Masters program and will receive up to 24 UoC of Advanced Standing.
Students who have completed the full 48 UoC of the Graduate Diploma (5659), and have a WAM of 65, may apply to transfer into this Masters program and will receive up to 48 UoC of Advanced Standing.
Students who have completed 24 UoC of the Graduate Diploma (5659), and have a WAM of 65, may apply to transfer into this Masters program and will receive up to 24 UoC of Advanced Standing.

The Award with Excellence is awarded in coursework masters programs, including Masters (Extension) but with the exception of Masters (Extended) such as JD and MD, when a Weighted Average Mean (WAM) of at least 80% has been achieved and at least 50% of the requirements of the award are completed at UNSW. All eligible programs will award 'with Excellence' except in special circumstances where approval of Academic Board has been given for a program to opt out.
