The Master of Education degree is designed to advance your expertise in learning, teaching, and leadership. The program allows flexibility to cater for your interests, with a range of specialisations and elective courses. Structure your program to learn from industry and research leaders, apply your deepening knowledge in your workplace, and transform learning and leadership. All specialisations can be completed in fully-online mode, with a range of face-to-face options for students who prefer an on-campus experience. Fully online mode is only available to domestic students and students not on an international student visa. Commonwealth Supported Places are available for domestic candidates. Note: This program does not offer professional accreditation to teach in primary or secondary schools in NSW or Australia. Program Structure

96 UOC plan (for students with no block credit granted on entry)

Students who have not been granted block credit must complete the following 96 UOC of courses (equivalent to 2 years full-time).

  1. Foundation courses (24 UOC)
  2. One specialisation (48 UOC)
  3. Education Electives (24 UOC)

72 UOC plan (for students granted 24 UOC block credit on entry)

Students who have been granted 24 UOC of block credit must complete a further 72 UOC of courses as follows (equivalent to 1.7 years full-time).

  3. Education Electives (12 UOC)

Internship, Placement and Exchange Opportunities

Students completing the TESOL specialisation must complete EDST5325 TESOL Advanced Professional Practice, which includes 25 days of advanced professional practice in an intensive TESOL setting, supported by four face-to-face lessons delivered on campus throughout the course of the term.

Students completing the Special Education specialisation must complete EDST5118 Professional Practice for Special Education, which includes 25 days of advanced professional practice in the area of special education, including high-level teaching, observation and critical reflection. This is supplemented by online activities and discussions facilitated through the LMS over the course of the term, as well as individual consultations organised between the student and course coordinator at intervals deemed appropriate.

Professional Outcomes

Professional Recognition

Applicants who hold an existing teaching qualification and complete the Special and Inclusive Education specialisation may be recognised by the NSW Department of Education as a special education teacher. Applicants who hold an existing teaching qualification in NSW or other Australian jurisdictions and complete the TESOL specialisation may be recognised by NESA as an accredited English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) teacher.

The Award with Excellence is awarded in coursework masters programs, including Masters (Extension) but with the exception of Masters (Extended) such as JD and MD, when a Weighted Average Mean (WAM) of at least 80% has been achieved and at least 50% of the requirements of the award are completed at UNSW. All eligible programs will award 'with Excellence' except in special circumstances where approval of Academic Board has been given for a program to opt out.

If you are selecting the TESOL specialisation and intend to take EDST5325 TESOL Advanced Professional Practice, please note this is a practicum class and can only be completed face to face.
