Description


Traces the growth and operation of Hollywood as an industry as well as a global cultural phenomenon; examines the technological, political and economic determinants that have shaped the history of the American film industry; and relates Hollywood's characteristic modes of narration and representation to their industrial, technological, and political conditions of existence.


Learning Outcomes


Students who complete this course successfully will be able to:
  • Recall key events, institutions and people in the history of Hollywood from the earliest days of the American film industry to the present
  • Describe in historical detail such issues as Hollywood's production processes, the economics of global film markets, Hollywood's political influence, Hollywood's adaptation to new technologies, etc.
  • Analyse in critical detail examples of Hollywood's film style across different periods and genres.
