Overview

Viewed from space, the Earth is a blue planet with over 70% of its surface covered by water. Because of this, the oceans exert a major influence on the Earth's climate and shipping operations. The three-year major program covers key principles of oceanography and the related issues of meteorology and … For more content click the Read More button below. There is no dedicated Level I course in Oceanography. Students who wish to complete this major should take Level 1 Physics. In addition Level 1 Mathematics (ZPEM1301 Mathematics 1A and ZPEM1302 Mathematics 1B or the equivalent in Engineering Mathematics courses) is a prerequisite for students enrolling in Level 2 and Level 3 Oceanography courses.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Exhibit depth and breadth of scientific knowledge in the subject areas of oceanography and the related disciplinary areas of physics, mathematics and remote sensing.
2.
Identify the role of fundamental oceanography concepts in a variety of different contexts and the most current information available on the state of the marine environment and its management.
3.
Understand ocean processes and articulate how oceanography uses observations of relationships between measurable quantities to create conceptual frameworks that can be used to explain, interpret and predict other observations.
4.
Problem-based learning: Design and plan an investigation.
5.
Gather, document, and analyse various oceanographic data Application of Knowledge and Skills.
6.
Demonstrate an ability to synthesise and critically evaluate oceanographic information from a range of sources
7.
Effectively communicate oceanographic results, information or arguments to a range of audiences, for a range of purposes, and using a variety of modes.
