The program is designed for aspiring materials scientists or engineers who want to gain a deeper understanding of the economic and social aspects of their profession, as well as develop skills in technical management and professional leadership. It is expected that students enrolled in this program will advance to entrepreneurial and managerial roles. A full range of commerce and engineering careers remains available to those who successfully complete both components of this double degree. Many materials scientists and engineers advance into technical management roles, so this double degree program not only strengthens the commerce background but also provides essential engineering skills. In addition, materials engineers are increasingly finding employment in the commercial sector, and the double degree program serves as a solid foundation for those entering fields such as banking, consultancy, or entrepreneurship. Students aspiring to pursue purely commercial careers will also benefit from the technical and numerate strengths acquired through the engineering program.

This double degree program offered by the Faculty of Science and UNSW Business School allows students to earn two degrees after five and a half years of successful study: a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Materials Science and Engineering, and a Bachelor of Commerce.

The program is designed for aspiring materials scientists or engineers who want to gain a deeper understanding of the economic and social aspects of their profession, as well as develop skills in technical management and professional leadership. It is expected that students enrolled in this program will advance to entrepreneurial and managerial roles.

Students must take 48 UOC of the following courses.

myBCom

Students need to complete three non-credit bearing myBCom professional development elements. COMM0999 is recommended to be enrolled in the first term of study, COMM1999 upon completion of the integrated first year courses and COMM3999 in the final term of study. Students will engage in course Moodle activities as well as the myBCom platform (https://mybcom.unsw.edu.au/) to complete these elements.

Commerce Majors

Students must complete a 48 UOC within a specified discipline (Commerce major) with at least 18 UOC of Level 3 courses to meet program requirements. Please note, this 48 UOC includes 1 course from the Integrated First Year (IFY) core. This means that students will complete 42 UOC in specified disciplinary courses outside the IFY core.

Prescribed Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Course6 Units of Credit:

Students must complete a 6 UOC Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course of the below courses within their program to meet the minimum requirement of 150 hours of professional work. Where students complete mandatory WIL in the non-Commerce component of the Double Degree, the 150 hours minimum requirement does not apply to the Commerce component of the program.

Business WIL Course

This course can count as a Business free elective or where applicable, can count as a Commerce major elective.

If a student is completing two commerce majors, the completed WIL course can only be counted towards one of the two majors. No double counting is permitted.

Non-Business WIL Course

This course can count as a Free Elective or General Education course.

Note: Students in Commerce Double Degrees have the option of meeting the mandatory WIL requirement in the non-Commerce component of the Double Degree. However these courses will not contribute towards the 96 UOC minimum Business UOC requirement.

Final Year Synthesis (FYS)

Students must complete their Final Year Synthesis (FYS) course within their final year of their Bachelor of Commerce program. That is, within 48 UOC or less remaining in their BCom program.

Students may meet more than one program requirement depending on their FYS course choice. For example; students who complete a FYS course that is also a Work Integrated Learning course within a major, will meet a major elective, WIL and FYS requirement.

Students who participate and complete significant extra-curricular projects (eg. Peter Farrell Cup), can apply for 0 UOC FYS (COMM3090).

Students may choose to use their electives to complete one of the following minors.

Minor Requirements: An approved disciplinary stream containing at least 18 UOC at Level 2 and Level 3.

3134 - Subsitution and Economics Course Requirements

1. Students enrolled in the dual BE (Hons)/BCom program are not required to undertake either Quantitative Analysis for Business and Economics (ECON1202) or Evidence-Based Problem Solving (COMM1110) as part of their Commerce component. Completion of the Maths courses in the Engineering component of the dual degree satisfies these requirements.

2. Only courses in the BE (Hons) in Materials Science and Engineering will count towards the honours calculation.

3. Students may substitute up to 12 UOC of Advanced Disciplinary courses (Level 5) in place of Disciplinary Knowledge courses from a school specified stream list of courses with the approval of the Program or Stream Authority.
