Overview

The Bachelor of Economics / Bachelor of Science program enables students to complete a program of study which combines the strengths and flexibility of each single degree. This program will appeal to students wanting to combine two strong, focused and highly regarded professional programs.

Double Degree Structure
192 Units of Credit:

Students must complete 192 UOC.

Bachelor of Economics/Science degree normally consists of 192 UOC.

These UOC are made up of:

Economics Component (96 UOC)
1. ECON1401 (6 UOC)
2. Introductory Business Core (6 UOC)
3. Economics major (48 UOC) (Please note: ECON1202 and ECON1203 is typically substituted by MATH courses under the Science component of the Double Degree)
4. Economics elective (24 UOC)
5. Business Elective (12 UOC)

Bachelor of Science (96 UOC)
1. An approved Bachelor of Science major; and
2. Science elective courses

Economics Majors
3543 - Economics

Students must complete at least one of the specialisations below.

Please note: If you choose to study a 2nd Economics major, you must choose another 6 courses (36 UOC) from the second major that do not overlap with the first major.

Majors
3970 - Science

Students must complete at least one Science major selected from the list below. Students should declare their major prior to commencing Stage 2 courses.

Notes:
1. Students in 4076 Science/Education can only choose from the following majors: Biology, Chemistry, Ecology, Geography, Mathematics for Education, Pathology, Physics, Physiology. All other majors in 3970 are not permitted.
2.Students are not permitted to take the Bioinformatics major BINFB1 when taking the degree in dual award mode with the Bachelor of Engineering (Bioinformatics) program.

Economics Core Course
3543 - Economics

Students must take 6 UOC of the following courses.

Please Note: ECON1101 must be completed before ECON1401. ECON1401 cannot be counted towards an Economics major.

Students must take at least 12 UOC of the following courses.

Students must have completed 30 UOC before taking any of the following courses.

Students must have completed 72 UOC before taking any of the following courses.

Economics Electives
3543 - Economics

Students must complete 12 UOC of Economics electives or accepted substitutes of Economics electives to ensure a student completes a minimum of 78 UOC of Economics courses.

Note: Students in combined Economics/Computer Science, Economics/Science or Economics/Adv Science (Hons) who complete MATH1031/1041, MATH1131/MATH1231, MATH1141/MATH1241 instead of ECON1202/ECON1203 have the option of counting the MATH pair towards the Science component and must complete 2 additional Economics electives (4 in total) OR towards the Economics component and must complete 2 additional Science electives.

Students in combined Economics/Adv Mathematics (Hons) must count the MATH pair towards their Science component and will therefore complete 24 UOC of Economics electives.

Minimum Economics UOC

Students must complete a minimum of 78 UOC of Economics courses or accepted substitutes of Economics electives.

Maximum Level 1 UOC
3543 - Economics

No more than 60 UOC in Level 1 courses will be counted towards the Economics component of the dual degree.

Minimum UNSW Business School UOC
3543 - Economics

Students must complete a minimum of 96 UOC of the following courses.

Level 1 Science UOC
3970 - Science

Students must complete a minimum of 24 UOC of the following courses.

Maximum Level 1 UOC
3970 - Science

A maximum of 72 UOC of Level 1 courses can be taken, including any General Education or mainstream Level 1 course taken to fulfil either the General Education or the Free Elective requirement.

MATH Course Substitution

Bachelor of Science students should note that they are, in most, instances required to complete two Level 1 MATH courses to meet the requirements for the BEc core quantitative courses ECON1202 and ECON1203. Level 2 and 3 Maturity Requirements
3543 - Economics

Students must have completed 24 UOC before taking any Level 2 courses.
Students must have completed 48 UOC before taking any Level 3 courses.

Double Counting
3970 - Science

Students cannot complete a minor with the same name as their nominated major, and Level II and III courses cannot be double-counted between majors and minors. More than one minor may be completed subject to the limit on double-counting. Students must declare their minor(s) before their final term.

Additional Information

Further Double Degree Specific Rules con't - If you complete the sequence MATH1131/MATH1231 or MATH1141/MATH1241 or MATH1151/MATH1251 you may use this as a substitute for the sequence ECON1202/ECON1203. These substitutes for the compulsory core courses count towards the 16 Business School courses (96 UOC) required for the degree.

Please Note: ECON1202 and ECON1203 may not be good substitutes for the indicated MATH and ACTL courses depending on your program. You should check with your program authority regarding course substitutions.
Students have the option of counting the MATH courses towards the BSc and doing additional electives offered by the School of Economics OR counting the MATH courses towards the BEc and doing additional electives offered by UNSW Science.
