Overview

The Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Economics (BCom/BEc) combines the professional orientation of the Bachelor of Economics program with the range of majors available through the Bachelor of Commerce program. Students will complete a major in both a selected area of Commerce and the professional discipline of Economics. With approval, students with an appropriate academic record may also enrol in an additional Honours year in the relevant program offered in either the Commerce or Economics component of the combined degree.

Double Degree Structure
192 Units of Credit:

Students must complete 192 UOC.

Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Economics combined degree normally consist of 192 UOC or 32 courses to be completed over 4 academic years.

A minimum of 78 UOC are to be in Economics courses (or approved Non-ECON substitute courses), 12 UOC to be completed as General Education and the remainder 102 UOC as Business School courses towards the Commerce major requirements and Business School electives.

These UOC need to be made up of:

  • Compulsory core courses (12 UOC; ECON1101 and ECON1203 are completed within the Economics Major requirements)
  • Flexible core courses (18 UOC)
  • ECON1401 (6 UOC)
  • Economics Major requirements (60 UOC)
  • Economics Electives (12 UOC)
  • Commerce Major requirements (42 UOC; For the majority of majors, students will complete 42 UOC as 6 UOC will be completed under the compulsory core or flexible core courses, except for students completing Accounting or Real Estate Studies majors)
  • Business School Electives (30 UOC; This will depend on the chosen Commerce major. Students have the option to complete an additional major/minor)
  • General Education courses (12 UOC)

Business Majors
3502 - Commerce

Major Requirements: 48 UOC in an approved disciplinary stream containing at least 18 UOC at level 3. (Note that the 48 UOC includes the first disciplinary course(s) in the Core (Compulsory or Flexible). This means that, for the majority of majors, students will complete 42 UOC in specified disciplinary courses outside the core, (except for the Real Estate Studies major).

Please Note:
-The Business Law major (TABLA1) is not available to students enrolled in 4733 Commerce/Law.
- Commerce/Education (secondary) 3462 students can only choose one major from:
(a) Business Economics
(b) Financial Economics
(c) Business Strategy and Economic Management
(d) Accounting (students who wish to meet CPA/CAANZ professional recognition requirements in this major will need to complete an additional Upper Level Economics elective above what is required within the commerce component)

Economics Majors
3543 - Economics

Students must complete at least one of the specialisations below.

Please note: If you choose to study a 2nd Economics major, you must choose another 6 courses (36 UOC) from the second major that do not overlap with the first major.

Business Core Courses
3502 - Commerce

Students must take 24 UOC of the following courses

ECON1203 is not required for:
- Commerce/Information systems students have the option to take ECON1203 or MATH1041
- Actuarial/Commerce student take MATH1151 and MATH1251 in place of ECON1203
- Commerce/Economics student ECON1203 is completed part of the Economics Major requirements.

Economics Core Course
3543 - Economics

Students must take 6 UOC of the following courses.

Please Note: ECON1101 must be completed before ECON1401. ECON1401 cannot be counted towards an Economics major.

Economics Electives
3543 - Economics

Students must complete 12 UOC of Economics electives or accepted substitutes of Economics electives to ensure a student completes a minimum of 78 UOC of Economics courses.

Business School electives
3502 - Commerce

UOC remaining after completion of the Compulsory core, Flexible core and Major requirements for the following double degree should be taken from within the UNSW Business School to ensure minimum program requirements are met.
- Commerce/Information Systems 3584 (24-30UOC in UNSW Business School courses to ensure a student completes a minimum of 96UOC of Business courses within the Bachelor of Commerce. The exact number of courses to complete will depend on the major chosen.)
- Actuarial studies/Commerce 3155 (42-48UOC These courses must be taken from Actuarial Studies or from the UNSW Business School. These UOC can also be made up of additional Actuarial Studies or Business School courses, or as part of a minor or major approved for the Bachelor of Actuarial Studies or Bachelor of Commerce. Note that, for some majors, additional study of courses above the minimum stipulated for the dual degree program may be required.
- Commerce/Economics 3521 (to ensure a minimum of 84 UOC of Economics courses are completed for the Economics component and a minimum of 96 UOC of UNSW Business School courses are required for the Commerce component. GEN courses cannot count as Business School electives.

General Education
3502 - Commerce

Students must take at least 6 UOC of the following courses.

General Education
3543 - Economics

Students must complete 6 UOC of General Education courses towards the Economics component of the dual degree however must complete 12 UOC overall in the combined degree.

Please note: Students enrolled in programs within the UNSW Business School cannot take General Education courses offered by the UNSW Business School (i.e. GENC code). These restrictions also apply to the following courses:
GENL2021 An Introduction to the Australian Legal System
GENL2032 Cyberspace Law 2.0

Students must have completed 48 UOC before taking any General Education course.

Maximum Level 1 UOC
3502 - Commerce

Students may complete up to a maximum of 72 UOC of the following courses in the overall double degree, excluding Level 1 courses completed as part of the General Education requirement in double degree.

Minimum Faculty UOC
3502 - Commerce

Students must complete a minimum of 96 UOC of the following courses.

Minimum Economics UOC
3543 - Economics

Students must complete a minimum of 78 UOC of Economics courses or accepted substitutes of Economics electives.

Maximum Level 1 UOC
3543 - Economics

No more than 72 UOC (not including 12 UOC of General Education courses) in Level 1 courses will be counted towards the dual degree.

Minimum Business School UOC
3543 - Economics

Students must complete 90 UOC of Business School courses for the Economics component of the double degree.

Students in Actuarial Studies/Economics will complete 36 UOC of Business School electives overall. Students in Commerce/Economics will complete 24-36 UOC of Business School electives (depending on Commerce major) overall.

Students completing combined Commerce/Economics and Actuarial Studies/Economics degrees must complete, at minimum 180 UOC from the Faculty of Business with another 12 UOC to be completed as General Education for a total of 192 UOC for degree award.

LEVEL 2 AND 3 MATURITY REQUIREMENTS
3502 - Commerce

Student must have completed 24 UOC before taking any level 2 courses.
Student must have completed 48 UOC before taking any level 3 courses.

Level 2 and 3 Maturity Requirements
3543 - Economics

Students must have completed 24 UOC before taking any Level 2 courses.
Students must have completed 48 UOC before taking any Level 3 courses.

Additional Information

Please Note: Students commencing prior to 2017 are required to take 84 UOC of Economics courses. Students commencing 2017 onwards are required to take 78 UOC of Economics courses.
