This Level 4 course for materials science and engineering students focuses on developing and advancing skills in data analysis, as well as writing and presenting for the materials engineering profession.
Students will learn how to analyse and compress data in suitable forms for visual presentation, and give effective oral presentations. Within the data analysis component, students will learn how to handle and represent data associated with various materials engineering problems, including data pre-processing, exploratory data analysis, understanding the importance of errors and statistics, data representation and ethical considerations in data handling and reporting. In the professional communication part of the course, students will learn about the principles of scientific writing and professional communication, how to identify and adapt to different audiences, and how to write clear and concise technical documents. They will also learn how to structure an effective oral presentation, create visual aids, and maintain professionalism in communication.
The course includes lectures, computer-based lab work, presentations, and written reports.
Previous knowledge of numerical methods and statistics is required.
