This course investigates the sometimes fraught and contentious relationship between historians and other stakeholders, such as governments, cultural institutions, the media and the public. Using a range of historical methods and materials, students will explore local and international case studies and examine the ways that the past is presented, interpreted and used by individuals, groups and communities. Key themes covered in the unit include the role of history in constructing national narratives, the challenges of exhibiting the past, and the politicisation of history and its consequences. The aim of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of how history has been used and abused and the connections, controversies and collisions between the past and present.
