Handbook

This 6 UOC is the capstone sequence of the Aeronautical Engineering Program and an elective for other undergraduate students.  The course introduces the requirements and initial sizing elements of aircraft and systems design and the relevant aircraft standards and regulations.  Students are exposed to the three phases of aircraft design, but before undertaking any design work students are required to develop design requirements.  Following the development of the design specification, the student becomes involved in the conceptual design or redesign of an aircraft.  Students will observe the development of a fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft using initial sizing parameters, then estimate of maximum take-off weight, wing loading, power loading, aerodynamic coefficients and physical dimensions during the first iteration of the design. The second part of the course reviews the design of aircraft systems, including undercarriage, flight controls, fuel, hydraulic, emergency, and electrical systems, and the integration of systems these into the aircraft.   Finally, students evaluate their designs through simulated flight-testing and wind tunnel testing to validate aerodynamics and aircraft handling qualities.
