In this course, you will be introduced to the scope of public health practice, with a focus on contemporary challenges impacting populations in Australia and internationally. Through case studies, a review of historical developments and an analysis of current issues, you will develop a deep understanding of the different approaches used in public health including the role of epidemiology and the principles of measurement, surveillance etc. The course will focus on the social determinants of health and inequities in health, stakeholder roles in public health, the development of health policy, as well as the application of health promotion strategies. 

Alongside the staff at the School of Population Health, this course will draw on the knowledge of a range of recognised population health experts including those working in Government and non-government roles. It will combine theoretical and practical materials to support your understanding of the concepts. This is a compulsory course for students enrolled in the Bachelor of International Public Health (BIPH) program and is also available as a general education option to students from other faculties.
