As a pre-service teacher, this course prepares you for teaching 21st century literacy with focus on the teaching of reading and viewing of written and multimodal texts in printed and digital platforms that students from years 3-6 encounter in the English and other subject areas. For the English subject, you will be introduced to a range of children’s literary genres by Australian, Indigenous Aboriginal, Asian and international authors in conventional and contemporary media including novel, picture book, graphic novel, and film. You will also learn about key English textual concepts as well as language and multimodal resources for constructing these concepts. For other subject areas, you explore a range of factual texts and their distinctive language and visual features. Building on the subject content knowledge, you will develop your understanding of curriculum documents relating to Reading/Viewing and content pedagogical knowledge at macro (programming), meso (lesson planning) and micro (teaching delivery) levels. The course also introduces you to technological applications that can be used for teaching Reading and Viewing and pedagogies to differentiate instructions for diverse learners.
