In this course, you will learn to harness your imagination and compose a short story. Together, we will consider a variety of works from Australia and around the world, and we will explore the principles that have shaped the development of this form such as compression, the epiphany, and the contemporary first-person testimony. In addition, we will look at techniques and strategies crucial to the success of the short form and useful to your development as writers, including the artful use of language, point of view, character development, narrative design, and your own voice, style and position as a contemporary writer of short fiction.

Throughout the course, we will consider the influence of new technologies, including Generative AI, on how we create and transmit stories. Writing exercises will be provided and you will have the opportunity to workshop your writing, to give and receive feedback, and to participate in the discussion of creative work. You will gain valuable skills in appraising your own work and the work of your peers, as well as knowledge about editing and the presentation and submission of your work for publication.
