What contributions do love and friendship make to a meaningful human life? What roles do love and friendship play in ethical, political, and social life? And what has been the role of love and friendship in philosophy itself? This course offers students an opportunity to think deeply about love and friendship from a range of philosophical perspectives. By studying texts from diverse historical periods and philosophical traditions—which may include classical Greek and Roman philosophy, classical Chinese Confucian and Daoist traditions, early modern European philosophy, and contemporary philosophy, including feminist and queer theories—students will deepen their understanding of concepts that are of crucial importance both to their own lives and to key areas of philosophy.
