The anthropology of development and critical development studies have been central to understanding the everyday experiences and unintended consequences of development. Drawing upon ethnographic texts, you will learn how development works in practice, and the realities of international aid agencies, NGOs, grassroots organisations and other development actors. The course takes a critical approach to understanding the consequences of development, but with an emphasis on equipping students to use critique to improve development practice. You will build a foundational understanding of theories in common usage in development studies, and use case studies to learn how to use theory to evaluate and anticipate the consequences of development. You will also deepen the skills and learnt dispositions of being a reflexive practitioner, and what this means for ethical development practice.
