This course is aimed to both broaden and deepen students professional knowledge on structural steel design. Students will be exposed to broaden topics related to use of cold form steel, high strength steel and nonlinear analysis procedure. They will also be taught on advance topics in structural steel design including plastic design and design of plate girder.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
· Understand the basic of plastic theory and calculate plastic resistance of steel section
· Apply plastic analysis to obtain the collapse mechanism and failure mode of steel frame
· Appreciate the important of nonlinear analysis for steel structures
· Understand the basic actions and responses of plate girder
· Design simple plate girder with transverse stiffeners
· Understand the basic differences between different kinds of steel including normal strength steel, cold-formed steels and high strength steel
· Master the basic principle of AS4600 for cold-formed steel design
· Appreciate the impacts of welding and evaluated temperature on steel structures

Revision of basic materials; Concept of plastic analysis and plastic hinge; Section properties for plastic analysis; Plastic hinge shape factor and conditions of collapse ;Theorems of plastic analysis; Plastic analysis of frame and ICR; Plastic analysis examples; Nonlinear analysis for steel structures; Introduction to plate girder; Behaviours and actions of plate girder; Resistance to bending and shear; Design for stiffener and end post; Design examples; Cold-formed steels and Introduction to AS 4600; Welding and temperature effects; High strength and alternative steels
