This course prepares you for the ways in which employers will likely manage your design work. The course locates these different ways of managing designers - and more generally the creative class, tech economy workers, and millennials, etc. - in the wider history of management. You will learn about different ways of organising the production of goods and services, from pre-capitalist, through Fordism to systems of Lean manufacturing. You will examine the difference between industrial and post-industrial economies, and new ways of managing the generation of value from information systems and digital platforms, including new forms of the so-called gig economy. You will also get practical experience of different forms of strategic planning, project management and performance motivation and evaluation.
