The course examines and critiques past and current Industrial Design practices within the context of technological, economic and social changes that have influenced the industry over time.

This course presents Design History primarily from a Western perspective and commences with the emergence and development of Industrial Design, from the Industrial Revolution through to the present day. Students will be introduced to important design styles, movements, notable designers, industrialists, and companies. It will then take a closer look at specific topics within this rich and diverse field of study.

Students will use their understanding of the historical development of Industrial Design to explore how contemporary trends may influence future Industrial Design practices to address challenges such as consumption, globalisation and social inequality.
