This intermediate course within the Object disciplinary studio will introduce you to the contextual and relational significance of design objects. Building on fundamental thinking-through-making skills acquired in the introductory course, you will focus on the context of culture and place. Through this contextual lens, you will develop an understanding of the capacity for designed objects to create and facilitate social and meaningful interactions. Throughout the course you will develop design responses to conceptual provocations to examine and critique notions of place via cultural and social practices. The first part of the course will focus on the development of a design proposal for an object or series of objects that integrates skills in conceptual thinking, cultural research, digital drawing and communication, and testing of materials and methods. You will then develop and resolve your proposed designs through prototyping that considers the design processes learned. Group work will be incorporated through class activities to explore ideas relating to the tasks and to introduce fundamental collaboration skills.
