This two-year degree is designed for those students with a Bachelor of Engineering degree wanting to enter the engineering profession, enabling them to expand their knowledge and skills in engineering management, acquire an in-depth knowledge of petroleum engineering specialisation, and gain technical expertise and a basis for international comparability and reciprocal recognition, facilitating the mobility of our engineering graduates.
This degree in Petroleum Engineering is offered as a stream within the Master of Engineering program (program code 8621) and enables students to specialise, and gain depth of knowledge across a broad range of areas, including project management, reservoir engineering, geo-mechanical engineering, and drilling engineering.
The stream is offered as a part of the 8621 program and requires the completion of 96 UoC of courses as follows:

In addition, as a part of the program, students are required to complete 60 days of Petroleum Engineering related Industrial Training (IT) to become exposed to industry and professional practice, and to apply their knowledge and skills in a professional setting.
The stream allows students to gain and apply advanced petroleum engineering knowledge through substantial professional development and postgraduate elective choice across a broad range of areas within Petroleum Engineering. Students are able to apply this advanced knowledge and develop their research or independent investigation skills via the compulsory 12 UoC project. This project may be a research or capstone-based project.
The Master of Petroleum Engineering provides advanced study in petroleum engineering, with various entry points and pathways of study depending on the student’s background.
Learning Outcomes

Graduates will be able to exhibit a respect for, and understanding of, professional engineering practice in the petroleum engineering discipline (satisfying Engineers Australia Stage 1 competencies 1.6 and 3.1). This capability is enhanced in the Master's program via the PE project, engineering and technical management electives, compulsory design courses, and compulsory industrial training.

This outcome is developed within the Master's program via the compulsory design proficiency course and PE project.

This capability is enhanced by the Masters program, particularly via the PE project but also through the management electives, design course and industrial training. Graduates will be able to effectively communicate with each other, with other professional groups, and with the general community, in order to convey the principles and merits of designs and innovation, and of analytical results.

Graduates will be able to proficiently apply systematic approaches to carrying out engineering design and projects (satisfying Engineers Australia Stage 1 competencies 2.3, and 2.4).
This outcome is developed within the Master's program via the PE project and compulsory design proficiency course. Graduates will develop an appreciation of, and ability to, engage in research and engineering design.

Graduates will be able to apply established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving (satisfying Engineers Australia Stage 1 competency 2.1).
After entry, this capability is enhanced by the Master's program, particularly via the compulsory PE project and core design course, such that students have the ability to analyse, criticise, and undertake design. Graduates will be capable of exercising advanced and creative problem solving skills when applied to unique and unfamiliar problems.

Graduates will be able to demonstrate in-depth as well as broad understanding of the specialist body of knowledge of petroleum engineering (satisfying Engineers Australia Stage 1 competency 1.3)
This learning outcome is firstly developed within the Master's program following a sufficient foundation from an existing 4-year bachelor's degree, but particularly enhanced via substantial professional development and postgraduate elective choice. Graduates should be thoroughly versed in, and be able to apply, the advanced technologies relevant to their chosen discipline.
