The Master of Marine Science & Management (MMarScMgt) is a 12 to 18 month full-time program depending on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The Program is aimed at both domestic and international students interested in the interdisciplinary field of marine science and management. Topics in marine science include coastal management and engineering, climate change, marine ecology and conservation, physical oceanography and modelling. The Master of Marine Science and Management is a joint program between UNSW and three Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) partner universities. The compulsory course (MSCI6681 Topics in Australian Marine Science) is a tutorial and seminar series jointly taught at SIMS at Chowder Bay, based around the analysis of data-streams from the Integrated Marine Observing System (www.imos.org.au). Students enrolled in the program at UNSW have the option to complete up to 2 courses (12 UOC) at the partner universities.

Program Structure

Students must complete 72 UOC when taken as a standalone program.

The MMarScMgt is comprised of the following:
- 24 UOC Core Courses undertaken at UNSW
- 36 - 48 UOC Prescribed Electives (Students may take up to 18 UOC of stage 3 BEES courses from the Prescribed Elective list).

Students may take up to 12 UOC of electives at the three SIMS partner universities (University of Technology Sydney, University of Sydney, and Macquarie University).

Progression Requirements

Students can cease enrolment and graduate with a Graduate Certificate in Marine Science and Management (program code 7266) after 24 UOC of study providing this includes MSCI6681, and that at least 12 UOC have been studied at UNSW.
Students can cease enrolment and graduate with a Graduate Diploma in Marine Science and Management (program code 5266) after 36 UOC of study providing this includes MSCI6681, and that at least 18 UOC have been studied at UNSW.

The Award with Excellence is awarded in coursework masters programs, including Masters (Extension) but with the exception of Masters (Extended) such as JD and MD, when a Weighted Average Mean (WAM) of at least 80% has been achieved and at least 50% of the requirements of the award are completed at UNSW. All eligible programs will award 'with Excellence' except in special circumstances where approval of Academic Board has been given for a program to opt out.
