Double Degree Structure

Students must complete 144 UOC.

Master of Information Technology (96 UOC)

One Specialisation:
  1. COMM5999 (0 UOC)
  2. MGMT5050 (6 UOC)
  3. Data analysis course (6 UOC)
  4. Specialisation (24 UOC)
  5. Electives (30 UOC) - 12 UOC of Engineering courses will be counted as Commerce electives (see double counting rules below), and students will complete a further 18 UOC of Business electives. 
  6. Capstone course (6 UOC)
Two Specialisations:
 
Students are recommended to take only one Master of Commerce specialisation to adhere to the UOC for their program. Students taking a second Master of Commerce specialisation will exceed the UOC for their program by at least 6 UOC.

Double Counting Rules

In this double degree, 96 UOC is required for the Master of Information Technology and 72 UOC is required for the Master of Commerce, for a total of 168 UOC. As some postgraduate courses required for both degrees overlap, the total minimum UOC required for the double degree is reduced by 24 UOC to 144 UOC.
 
Up to 24 UOC can be double counted towards the requirements of both programs, as follows:
 
  • COMP9024 (6 UOC) in the Master of Information Technology can be double counted as COMM5000 or COMM5501 (6 UOC) in the Master of Commerce.
  • 12 UOC of Disciplinary Knowledge Electives in the Master of Information Technology can be double counted as 12 UOC of Electives outside of the UNSW Business School in the Master of Commerce.
  • MGMT5050 (6 UOC) in the Master of Commerce can be double counted as 6 UOC of Electives in the Master of Information Technology (excluding Information Technology specialisation); or MGMT5050 (6 UOC) in the Master of Commerce can be double counted as 6 UOC of Disciplinary Knowledge Electives in the Information Technology specialisation in the Master of Information Technology.

Enrolment Disclaimer

Accreditation

The Engineering component of this double degree has the same accreditation status as the Master of Information Technology. For details, please see Master of Information Technology (8543).

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students can apply for a maximum of 66 UOC of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

For the Commerce component, students may be eligible to receive up to 18 UOC of RPL for completed Bachelor’s (or equivalent AQF 7 program) in Business. Alternatively, students may be eligible to receive up to 18 UOC of RPL for relevant courses of a completed or partially completed postgraduate degree (or equivalent AQF 9 program).

For the Information Technology component, up to 48 UOC of RPL may be awarded to students with degrees from cognate programs. All courses completed towards the Graduate Certificate or the Graduate Diploma of Information Technology at UNSW will be recognised for the purpose of RPL for the Master of Information Technology. Students intending to specialise in two areas are permitted a maximum of 24 UOC of RPL.

Students will be notified of the RPL awarded in their official letter of offer.
