  5. Electives (30 UOC) - up to 2 courses can be postgraduate courses from other Faculties, subject to enrolment requirements
  6. Capstone course (6 UOC)

Two Specialisations:

  4. Specialisation 1 (24 UOC)

Note: In this double degree students take 96 UOC for the Master of Engineering Science and 72 UOC for the Master of Commerce, for a total of 168 UOC. Because some postgraduate courses required for both degrees overlap, the total minimum UOC required for the double degree is reduced by 24 UOC to 144 UOC.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students can apply for a maximum of 72 UOC of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) - a maximum of 24 UOC in the Commerce component and a maximum of 48 UOC in the Engineering Science component.

For the Commerce component, students may be eligible to receive up to 24 UOC - which is four courses - of RPL for previous undergraduate study in Business and/or study in areas such as data/statistics and Python coding. Further RPL, up to 50% of program, may be awarded based on equivalent Postgraduate studies if equivalent courses are relevant within program structure.

For the Engineering Science component, between 24 and 48 UOC of RPL may be awarded to candidates with degrees from cognate programs. All courses completed towards the Graduate Certificate or the Graduate Diploma of Engineering Science at UNSW will be recognised for the purpose of RPL for the Master of Engineering Science

You will be notified of the RPL awarded in your official letter of offer. 

Double Counting

Up to 24 UOC can be double counted towards the requirements of both programs, as follows:

  • MGMT5050 (6 UOC) in the Master of Commerce can be double counted as GSOE9510 (6 UOC), an Engineering Technical Management course in the Master of Engineering Science

  • 6 UOC from the Foundation Core in the Master of Commerce specialisation can be double counted as GSOE9010, GSOE9011 or GSOE9220 (6 UOC) in the Master of Engineering Science

  • 12 UOC from the Masters Project courses (CVEN9451, CVEN9452 and CVEN9453) or Masters Practice Project courses (CVEN9050 and CVEN9051) in the Master of Engineering Science can be double counted as a Capstone course (6 UOC) and Elective course (6 UOC) in the Master of Commerce
