The two-year Master of Health Leadership and Management (Extension) / Master of Global Health (MHLMext/MGH) dual extension program is an innovative approach to postgraduate education. The MHLMext gives you the opportunity to extend your knowledge and skills in health services by completing additional research methodology courses and/or an advanced research project in a health services-related topic. You will graduate with specialist knowledge and skills in global public health and health leadership and management. Learn to recognise the relationships between public health and the delivery of healthcare and to lead in complex political and administrative structures. Our MHLMext/MGH includes a multidisciplinary program of study aimed at developing global health leaders. You will gain core skills in strategic planning, policy development, change management, quality enhancement, and decision-making. These are complemented by core public health skills in epidemiology, biostatistics, health promotion and skills required to address the challenges of the social determinants of health. You will learn to draw on this interdisciplinary knowledge and research to address global health challenges, including the politics of global health, globalisation, decolonisation, human rights and the environment. The MHLMext/MGH program fosters judgement-ready critically reflexive practitioners who can lead, manage and improve health services and health systems and contribute to improving public health outcomes in diverse settings drawing on a global health perspective. Through the extension program, you will gain an understanding of the specialised skills required for roles that involve developing, evaluating and undertaking research to enhance health service delivery. Graduates typically find employment across a range of employers, including in government ministries and departments of Health, NGOs, primary care and community healthcare services, hospital settings in the public and private sectors in Australia.

Double Degree Structure

Students must complete 96 UOC.

1. Compulsory courses - 48 UOC
2. Global Health elective courses - 18 UOC
3. Prescribed elective courses - 6 UOC
4. Extension research project and elective courses - 24 UOC

Students must take 48 UOC of the following courses.

Academic Practice: International Students

Students from non-English speaking countries who have not previously completed a degree in Australia or other English speaking country are also required to take the core course PHCM9100 Academic Practice in their first semester. This course is also available to all other students to assist in gaining maximum benefit from their study, particularly if returning to study after a long break. The course is offered at no charge to students and does not contribute to the UOC requirements of the degree

Global Health Prescribed Electives18 Units of Credit:

Students must take at least 18 UOC of the following courses.

Extension Project and Coursework Electives

Extension program students have two options to complete the extension component of their program (24UOC):

1. Students must complete at least 6UOC of approved research methodology coursework listed below and additional prescribed electives (18UOC); or

2. Students who achieve a WAM of greater or equal to 75% in a minimum 18 UOC of their program may elect to undertake a research project in place of course electives as either:
- 6 UOC research project and 3 additional prescribed elective courses (18 UOC); or
- 12 UOC research project and 2 additional prescribed elective courses (12UOC); or
- 18 UOC major research project and 1 additional prescribed elective course (6 UOC).

Part-time students can complete the 12 UOC Project (PHCM9144) part time by enrolling in PHCM9145 (6 UOC) in two consecutive terms or the 18 UOC Major Project (PHCM9150) by enrolling in PHCM9151 (9UOC) in two consecutive terms or PHCM9152 (6 UOC) in three consecutive terms.
