Overview

This program is not available to International applicants. It is not a full-time program. The Master of Counselling Social Work (MCSW) is a 2-year part-time, 48 UOC program offered through the School of Social Sciences. The MCSW is designed for practicing social workers, to consolidate and extend counselling knowledge and skills. The MCSW develops your knowledge and skills in counselling by building on your professional social work experience and providing a contextual and relational orientation to counselling. During the program, you will study a number of counselling approaches and apply these approaches to your own counselling social work practice. You will have the opportunity to engage in in-depth analysis of your own practice in peer and consultant-led case discussion groups. In both theory seminars and practice seminars, a participatory format is used to allow you and your fellow students to integrate ideas with your own counselling orientation and context.

Program Structure
48 Units of Credit:

Students must complete 48 UOC as a standalone program.

Students are required to complete 6 courses (48 units of credit) over 2 years.

A capstone course, SOCF5112 draws together the various strands of the program and focus on the broader context of counselling in social work settings.

Students must take 12 UOC of the following courses.

Note: Students who achieve a minimum distinction-level average in courses totalling 18 UOC are eligible to apply to substitute the 12 UOC course (2 x 6 UOC multi-term course) SOCF5110, for the course SOCF5112 (12 UOC).

The Award with Excellence is awarded in coursework masters programs, including Masters (Extension) but with the exception of Masters (Extended) such as JD and MD, when a Weighted Average Mean (WAM) of at least 80% has been achieved and at least 50% of the requirements of the award are completed at UNSW. All eligible programs will award 'with Excellence' except in special circumstances where approval of Academic Board has been given for a program to opt out.
