Overview

The Master of Marine Science & Management (MMarScMgt) is a 12 to 18 month full-time program depending on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The Program is aimed at both domestic and international students interested in the interdisciplinary field of marine science and management. Topics in marine science include coastal management and engineering, climate change, marine ecology and conservation, physical oceanography and modelling. The Master of Marine Science and Management is a joint program between UNSW and three Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) partner universities. The compulsory course (MSCI6681 Topics in Australian Marine Science) is a tutorial and seminar series jointly taught at SIMS at Chowder Bay, based around the analysis of data-streams from the Integrated Marine Observing System (www.imos.org.au). Students enrol in the program at UNSW, but have the option to complete up to 3 courses (18 UOC) at the partner universities.

Program Structure
72 Units of Credit:

Students must complete 72 UOC as a standalone program.

The MMarScMgt consists of 72 UOC comprised of the following:
- 24 UOC of compulsory Core Courses undertaken at UNSW
- 48 UOC of directed electives from the list on the Handbook. Students may take up to 18 UOC of electives at the three SIMS partner universities (University of Technology Sydney, University of Sydney, and Macquarie University).  Students may take up to 18 UOC of stage 3 courses from the list.  

Prescribed Electives

Students must take at least 30 UOC, up to a maximum of 48 UOC of the following courses.

Electives (at SIMS Partner Universities)

Students may complete up to 18 UOC from at least two of the three Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) partner universities; University of Technology Sydney, the University of Sydney and Macquarie University.

The Award with Excellence is awarded in coursework masters programs, including Masters (Extension) but with the exception of Masters (Extended) such as JD and MD, when a Weighted Average Mean (WAM) of at least 80% has been achieved and at least 50% of the requirements of the award are completed at UNSW. All eligible programs will award 'with Excellence' except in special circumstances where approval of Academic Board has been given for a program to opt out.
