Space Systems Design introduces the engineering design process for spacecraft. The course focuses on systems engineering and design factors associated with both the space and ground segments of missions, while providing an introduction to important subsystems including: propulsion, communications, attitude determination and control, power, and thermal management. Students will also be exposed to broader design elements related to the selection of launch vehicles, as well as spacecraft manufacturing, integration, and testing. During the course, students will learn how to define the main requirements that drive space mission design, various trade studies that may need to be performed, and how to go about selecting appropriate subsystem components. The course will also provide students with a basic understanding of various spacecraft payloads and how these influence overall spacecraft design.
