Overview

In this course, students will learn how different philosophical approaches - such as objectivity, ethics, truth, and democracy - influence journalistic practices, values, and the role of the press in society. In this course you will engage with critical and theoretical perspectives on news media practices old and new, ranging from the ideals and illusions of objectivity; censorship, self-censorship, and the limits of free speech; Citizen Journalism and citizen witnessing; to decolonising journalism and Indigenous epistemologies. You will also explore the activism dimension of contemporary journalism and how it's changing core philosophies in the field. You will also gain an understanding of intersectionality in news media, and the philosophical crisis of journalism with the introduction of AI into newsrooms.

Prerequisite: Enrolment in a postgraduate Journalism & Communication, PR & Advertising, Law, or Law, Media & Journalism program
