Overview

This course gives students an introduction to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, and the way they’re used in decentralised finance (DeFi). The course works from the basic concepts surrounding currency, to the evolution of the first blockchain technologies, to modern decentralised financial markets and their (attempted) regulation. The course covers Ethereum and smart contracts, which form the basis of further topics including automated market makers, decentralised borrowing and lending markets, stablecoins, on- chain derivatives, DAOs and insurance. The course will also examine blockchain scalability (layer 2 solutions), the evolution of fundraising, regulation and implications and applications in traditional finance. The course will involve practical activities with cryptocurrencies, trading, and creating your own cryptocurrency (ERC20 token).
