Handbook

This course explores the hidden hand of intelligence and its influence in waging war and, more broadly, on world events. Combining theory and historical examples, with a strong emphasis on primary source research and analysis, students will learn about human, imagery, open-source and signals intelligence, moles and molehunters, covert action, intelligence diplomacy, analytical failures, and the ethics of spying. They will consider the place and role of intelligence agencies in the national strategic and security contexts in which they operate through diverse themes, including strategic intelligence, its tactical implementation, politicisation, and influence on strategic policy.
