Traffic engineering professionals are tasked with ensuring the safe and efficient movement of people and goods through the provision and maintenance of transportation systems. The effectiveness of the transport system defines the economic development and quality of life for the entire community.

This course offers students an advanced understanding of traffic flow theory fundamentals and simulation modeling approaches. The course covers topics including fundamental traffic flow characteristics and variables, including their definitions and empirical relations. Other topics include queuing theory and shockwave theory and analysis. The course introduces students to both macroscopic and microscopic traffic flow models. Design and operations of unsignalised and signalised intersections, as well as network traffic flow and pedestrian traffic flow characteristics and modelling, are also discussed.
