Handbook

The goal of the course is to provide a legal orientation for cyber security professionals. Students are not assumed to have a legal background. The course offers an introduction to legal and policy issues in cyber security. It introduces students to relevant core legal concepts, including understanding the role of legislation and case law as well as other forms of regulation, including technical standards. It will guide students in understanding the ‘map’ of law and regulation relevant to cyber security and the role of these in Australia’s cyber security policy.

The course helps cyber security professionals become familiar with legal issues they are likely to encounter and how to manage them in different circumstances - during normal operations, in responding to an incident, and in the aftermath of an incident. After completing the course, students will be aware of and be able to manage core compliance obligations as well as be in a good position to interact meaningfully with legal advisers in more complex scenarios. The focus is on Australian law, but comparative and international material is included where relevant, particularly where it impacts Australian industry.
