The BABS Graduate Diploma program is for graduates who wish to obtain specialist training and experience in a particular area of science. The program is also recommended as a pathway to gain a qualification for entry into the Master of Science by Research or PhD programs. Students become part of a research team within one of the research labs in the School, and complete a supervised research project and thesis during the year-long program. Students normally complete a project in the research area of their major, but there is some flexibility depending on student interest and supervisor availability.
This is one of the courses used to fulfil the research project requirements of the Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science stream in the Graduate Diploma (Research) program. It consists of no formal classes; instead students meet with their supervisor and undertake largely independent research. Students also have to complete 3 coursework subjects. All students have a supervisor and are assigned an examiner in the School of BABS. In their first term students will submit a literature review to their supervisor for feedback on their writing and critique of the available literature. Students are then expected to present a seminar and submit a written thesis at the completion of their project.
Graduate Diploma projects range from hypothesis driven “blue sky” research that advances human knowledge, to application-focused research that has potential medical and industrial benefits for society. By investigating and understanding life at the molecular and cellular level, students will therefore help solve real-world challenges.
