Handbook

The course provides an insight into Australia’s political, economic, strategic and people-to-people engagement with Asia from colonial times to the present. The course discusses the impact of Chinese immigration on the Australian colonies and the origins of the White Australia policy; Australia’s incipient engagement with Asia, and particularly Japan, in the first four decades after Federation; the  effect of the Second World War and the Cold War Australia’s on relations with Asia; Australia’s engagement with Asia in the post-colonial era from 1972 to 1996; and the transformative effect on Australia of the rise of China in the period  from 1996 to the present.
