Overview

This course is an introduction to mining rock mechanics and the rock mechanics context within new and operating underground mines. The course will address the basic physical principles applied to rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering in an underground mining environment; elasticity and stress; rock properties and methods of determination; rock response to load; failure modes; time-dependency; stiffness; energy release; rock mass characterisation; geological environment and structure; stress environment and methods of determination; hydro-geological environment and soft rock/soil mechanics considerations.
