This course is an elective in the MTax.  The goal of this independent and research-based course is to provide you with an opportunity to pursue advanced, innovative, and in-depth taxation research in an area of your choosing. The course has no taught component. You will need to identify a relevant research topic in consultation with the Course Coordinator, and submit a research proposal, very early in the term. You will then be allocated by the Course Coordinator to one of the School’s academic staff who will be responsible for the supervision of your research. This person will have expertise in the area of your proposed research project and can be used as a sounding board for ideas and for other guidance that you may require throughout the course. You will, however, be expected to take personal responsibility for the necessary research into your proposed topic and will be required to submit a mini-dissertation (10,000 to 15,000 words, comprising 100% of the course mark) by the end of the course. Authors of the better mini-dissertations may be encouraged to submit their papers to quality tax journals, which may be published subject to the usual refereeing processes. Students undertaking this course must adhere to the highest standards of academic integrity and professionalism, which would include avoidance of the re- cycling of research papers submitted for other courses in the MTax program.
