Space has become an increasingly important site of geo-strategic competition, as an increasing number of state, non-state and commercial actors seek to exploit the opportunities of this domain. This under-regulated conflict and competition risks making Earth orbits and beyond unusable in the near future and for generations to come, with potentially devastating consequences down here on Earth. This course aims to introduce students to these challenges and to the legal, regulatory and other normative frameworks being developed to manage them. It seeks to enable students to navigate, and help others to navigate, those frameworks to achieve their objectives (and those of their organisations) and be valuable participants in the sustainable use and exploration of outer space.
