Handbook

This course provides an introduction to the role of urban design in the making of the built environment. Grounded in a critical appreciation of design principles, topics include site investigation, defining urban structure, enhancing the public realm, understanding building typologies, and controlling built form. The course is structured around lectures, methodological instruction, discussions, case studies, site visits, and design projects. Assessments are based on individual and group projects. Students submit projects in written reports and oral presentations, supported by drawings, sketches and images. Elements of Urban Design is a foundational course offered at graduate level for students undertaking the Graduate Certificate in Built Environment. It provides students from a non-cognate discipline an introductory understanding of urban design theory and practice. Students will acquire a base level of knowledge and skills to enter the Master of Urban Development and Design.
