Overview

This 4 year dual program leads to the award of a Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Information Systems (BCom/BIS) and will meet the needs of students who want a strong, focused and highly regarded business degree combined with an Information Systems degree. Organisations value business savvy IS graduates who understand the business and technical issues which surround and impact their information systems. As part of the degree program students will complete a major stream in both Information Systems (IS) and an approved disciplinary stream within the UNSW Business School.

In selecting their combination of majors, students should note that while there is a wide range of choice, not every combination may be able to be completed in 4 years of full-time study.

Double Degree Structure

Students must complete 192 UOC.

In this double degree 96 UOC is required for the Bachelor of Commerce, and 120 UOC is required for the Bachelor of Information Systems for a total of 216 UOC. However, the first year Business courses required for both degrees overlap, and therefore the total minimum UOC required for the double degree is reduced by 24 UOC to 192 UOC.

Bachelor of Information Systems (120 UOC)

Business Core Courses (30 UOC) - these courses will be satisfied by the Integrated First Year Courses taken as part of the Bachelor of Commerce requirement.
Information Systems Core (72 UOC) - students should enrol into INFS2602 Managing Information Systems instead of INFS1602 Digital Transformation in Business.
Information Systems Prescribed Electives (12 UOC)
Work Integrated Learning Course (6 UOC) *

*NOTE: Students are required to complete only one WIL course in the program. Students are allowed to choose the WIL course from either the BCom or BIS list.

Electives

Once requirements for the Commerce and Information Systems programs have been met, students need to take free electives to ensure a total of 192 UOC is completed for the Double-Degree.

Majors/Minors

Students may choose to complete INFSG1 or INGFS2 Cybersecurity Management for the Bachelor of Commerce component, and must follow the rules listed in the handbook for INFSG1 and INFSG2 regarding the the overlapping courses with the Bachelor of Information Systems degree.

myBCom

Students need to complete three non-credit bearing myBCom professional development elements. COMM0999 is recommended to be enrolled in the first term of study, COMM1999 upon completion of the integrated first year courses and COMM3999 in the final term of study. Students will engage in course Moodle activities as well as the myBCom platform (https://mybcom.unsw.edu.au/) to complete these elements.

Commerce Majors

Students must complete a 48 UOC within a specified discipline (Commerce major) with at least 18 UOC of Level 3 courses to meet program requirements. Please note, this 48 UOC includes 1 course from the Integrated First Year (IFY) core. This means that students will complete 42 UOC in specified disciplinary courses outside the IFY core.

Double Majors

If a student chooses to complete 2 commerce majors and the majors have a Integrated First Year (IFY) core course in common, they are permitted to double count a maximum of 6 UOC of this overlap unless specified otherwise.

Students completing a major sequence with courses in common which are not part of the IFY courses may only count the overlap towards one major and must replace this course within the other major with a major elective of the same level or higher (e.g. Level 3 core course for a Level 3 major elective).

Prescribed Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Course6 Units of Credit:

Students must complete a 6 UOC Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course of the below courses within their program to meet the minimum requirement of 150 hours of professional work. Where students complete mandatory WIL in the non-Commerce component of the Double Degree, the 150 hours minimum requirement does not apply to the Commerce component of the program.

Business WIL Course

This course can count as a Business free elective or where applicable, can count as a Commerce major elective.

If a student is completing two commerce majors, the completed WIL course can only be counted towards one of the two majors. No double counting is permitted.

Non-Business WIL Course

This course can count as a Free Elective or General Education course.

Note: Students in Commerce Double Degrees have the option of meeting the mandatory WIL requirement in the non-Commerce component of the Double Degree. However these courses will not contribute towards the 96 UOC minimum Business UOC requirement.

Final Year Synthesis (FYS)

Students must complete their Final Year Synthesis (FYS) course within their final year of their Bachelor of Commerce program. That is, within 48 UOC or less remaining in their BCom program.

Students may meet more than one program requirement depending on their FYS course choice. For example; students who complete a FYS course that is also a Work Integrated Learning course within a major, will meet a major elective, WIL and FYS requirement.

Students who participate and complete significant extra-curricular projects (eg. Peter Farrell Cup), can apply for 0 UOC FYS (COMM3090).

Work Integrated Learning (WIL)6 Units of Credit:

As part of the Bachelor of Information Systems degree, students must complete a 6 UOC Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course, chosen from the below courses within their program, to satisfy the minimum of 150 hours of professional work that is a requirement of the degree. The same 150 hour minimum professional work requirement applies to the Bachelor of Commerce/Information Systems double degree. Students can satisfy the requirement in either the commerce or information system component of the double degree. For the avoidance of doubt, students are NOT required to satisfy the requirement in both components of the double degree.

SAS Certification and SAS Academic Digital Badge Requirements

Students who complete any four of the following five courses at UNSW will be eligible for an SAS Certificate in Business Analytics (awarded jointly by UNSW and SAS) and an SAS Academic Digital Badge. Please note that for any of the listed Business Analytics courses, being awarded Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will not count as part of the four required courses for the SAS Certificate and Digital Badge.

Students enrolled in the COMPD1 Computer Science (Database Systems) major who choose to replace INFS2608 with COMP9313 AND COMP9315 should complete INFS3603, INFS3822, INFS3830 and INFS3873 to meet the SAS Certification requirement.
