Program Description

The Bachelor of Media Arts Honours (BMA Hons) is the equivalent of four years full-time study, designed to meet industry demand for creative practitioners and content developers who possess multiple skills and breadth of knowledge in media arts including video making, sound, web design, digital imaging, 3D modelling, animation, and critical and creative thinking within the domain of digital media. The BMA offers students strong fundamentals combined with creative development and flexibility to explore a digital media major, and undertake a significant research project and industry experience internship in their final year.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The Bachelor of Media Arts Honours aims to produce creative content developers with sound technical skills and the ability to work creatively and collaboratively across diverse media and to be able to undertake research and experimentation in digital media.

Graduates will be key players in the arts, digital media, entertainment and internet-based media with strengths in creative design and technical innovation.

Program Structure

The degree of Bachelor of Media Arts is awarded as a Honours degree at the completion of four years full-time study.

The BMA (Hons) consists of a Media Arts core that provides a depth of engagement with Media Arts studies (144 UOC) and an Elective and General Education component (48 UOC) that provides breadth of experience.

The program structure is:

Year 1

Art History and Theory

Students must complete 12 UOC in Art History and Theory, normally in their 2nd year, from approved courses (as listed below):

General Education Requirements

General Education is the completion of two courses (12 UOC) offered outside the COFA Faculty.

Honours

Honours is awarded on the basis of meritorious performance across the whole program, and performance in the Honours Research Project, which is comprised of Honours Studio Practice (75%) and Seminar (25%).

Students will be considered for the award of honours according to the following scale, which includes the Marks from the all Major courses, weighted according to stage (later stages with a higher weighting), and results from the Honours research project.
  • Honours Class 1: If WAM greater than or equal to 75.0 and Honours Research Project mark greater than or equal to 85
  • Honours Class 2 Division 1: else WAM greater than or equal to 70.0 and Project mark greater than or equal to 75
  • Honours Class 2 Division 2: else WAM greater than or equal to 65.0 and Project mark greater than or equal to 65
  • Honours Class 3: else WAM greater than or equal to 50.0 and Project mark greater than or equal to 50

Academic Rules

Complete 192 UOC consisting of:
  • Media Arts core (144 UOC)
  • Electives (36 UOC)
  • General Education (12 UOC)
Complete at least 30 UOC of Level I courses before enrolling in Level II or Level III courses
