This 4 year dual program leads to the award of a Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Information Systems (BCom/BIS) and will meet the needs of students who want a strong, focused and highly regarded business degree combined with an Information Systems degree. Organisations are always looking for “business savvy” IS graduates who understand the business and technical issues which surround and impact their information systems. As part of the degree program students will complete a major stream in both Information Systems (IS) and an approved disciplinary stream within the Australian School of Business.

In selecting their combination of majors, students should note that while there is a wide range of choice, not every combination may be able to be completed in 4 years of full-time study. Students are also not able to take a modern language as their major.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes
On successful completion of the BCom, students will have the ability to:
  • demonstrate business knowledge and apply that knowledge in business problems
  • demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • present complex issues in coherent written statements and oral presentations
  • demonstrate understanding of disciplinary issues in a local or global context
  • demonstrate understanding of the principles of working collaboratively in teams
  • understand the social and ethical dimensions in their chosen disciplinary areas.
The objective of the BIS is to develop students’:
  • professional competence in the use and application of IS and Information Technology (IT) in a commercial environment
  • understanding of the business implications of IS and IT systems
  • competence in the management of IS and IT systems.

Program Structure
Studies leading to the award of the Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Information Systems degree normally consists of 192 UOC or 32 courses to be completed over 4 academic years.

These UOC need to be made up of:
  • Compulsory core courses
  • Flexible core courses
  • Major requirements (Commerce and IS)
  • ASB electives
  • General education courses
Compulsory Core Courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses):
And ONE of:
Flexible Core Courses account for 18 UOC (3 courses):

Major Requirement

Students must complete at least 72 UOC (12 courses) in the Bachelor of Information Systems courses (INFS courses). This 72 UOC includes INFS1602. A full list of INFS core and elective courses is provided at program plan page.

Students must also complete 48 UOC in an approved disciplinary stream offered by the Australian School of Business containing at least 18 UOC at level 3. (Note that the 48 UOC includes the first disciplinary course(s) in the Core (Compulsory or Flexible). This means that, for the majority of majors, students will complete 42 UOC in specified disciplinary courses outside the core). Students should refer to the Bachelor of Commerce program for further information.

ASB Electives

24 UOC – 30 UOC, depending on choice of Commerce major. These courses are to be taken from within the Australian School of Business in order to fulfil the requirement for this dual program of 180 UOC in Information System and Business courses. Students may wish to use these UOC to complete a minor (30UOC) in an approved Business stream.

General Education Requirements
Students in this program must complete 12 UOC in General Education courses. General education courses must be taken outside the Australian School of Business. These courses allow you to select either courses that were developed especially for the General Education Program (beginning with GEN) or to choose mainstream courses that are offered in the degree programs of other UNSW faculties. For further information about General Education Requirements please refer to the UNSW Online Handbook.

Please note that students enrolled in programs within the Australian School of Business cannot take General Education courses offered by the Business School (i.e. cannot complete courses with a GENC code). These restrictions also apply to the following courses:
  • GENL2015 The World of Work
  • GENL2021 An Introduction to the Australian Legal System
  • GENL2032 Cyberspace Law 2.0
  • GENL5021 Business Law Basics

Honours
High achieving students may undertake honours in the area of their business major by enrolling in 4501 BCom(Hons) program.
