Program Description
The Dual degree program, Bachelor of Commerce Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is a four-year program (192 UOC) for intending secondary school teachers. The program is a nationally accredited pre-service qualification.

Students combine studies in two single secondary teaching specialisations from the BCom. The program covers both theoretical and practical aspects of education, including 80 days supervised professional experience in at least two different secondary schools.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) in Dual Mode

Program Structure
The basic requirements for the degree in Dual mode (96 UOC) are:

Professional Experience

EDST2002, EDST6760 and EDST6761 provide students with a total of 80 days of professional experience in secondary schools and other educational settings.

Prescribed Education Methods

Students complete two courses in each single teaching specialisation from the following:
  • Business Studies
  • Economics
The teaching specialisation requirements are summarised below:
Teaching Specialisation (offered as a single method)
Two single methods: A Major stream is required for the first teaching method, and a Minor stream for the second teaching method.
Business Studies
Business-related studies, with a Major or Minor stream in business law (Australian/ English) , economics, human resource management , industrial relations, marketing, finance, accounting , or business management. In addition, students must complete: (a) 6 UOC in Accounting or Finance, AND (b) 6 UOC in Business Management (the courses in Accounting, Finance and Business Management may be first year courses).
Economics
Major or Minor stream in Economics   

Prescribed Education Electives

English Proficiency

Proficiency in English is essential in all Education courses. It is expected that all applicants will have a Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in Standard English, English as a Second Language or Advanced English, or an overall IELTS score of 7.5, with a minimum of 8.0 in Speaking and Listening and a minimum of 7.0 in Reading and Writing, or the equivalent.

Award with Distinction

High achieving students who secure a WAM of 75 in each program and who have completed at least 48 UOC in each program at UNSW are eligible for the award of their Pass Degree "with Distinction".

Honours

High achieving Bachelor of Education (Secondary) students who have successfully completed all program requirements may apply for admission to honours in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) (Honours) program 4509. A minimum WAM of 70 is required for entry into Honours.

Academic Rules
To qualify for the award of the degree at Pass level, a student must:
  1. enrol in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) in Dual mode and complete 96 UOC;
  2. complete the method requirements for one or two areas of teaching specialisation
  3. complete at least 30 UOC of Level 1 courses before enrolling in Level 2 courses
  4. complete at least 30 UOC of Level 2 courses before enrolling in Level 3 courses


Requirements for the BCom in Dual Mode (96 UOC)
  1. Compulsory core courses (24 UOC)
  2. Flexible core courses (24 UOC)
  3. Major requirements (48 UOC)
Compulsory core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses)
Flexible core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses). Students should choose four courses from the following list:
Major requirements 48 UOC in an approved disciplinary stream offered by the Australian School of Business, containing at least 18 UOC at level 3. (Note that the 48 UOC includes the first disciplinary course(s) in the Core (Compulsory or Flexible). This means that, for the majority of majors, students will complete 42 UOC in specified disciplinary courses outside the core. Therefore students may need to complete another 6 UOC of ASB courses to ensure they fulfil the 96 UOC required for the BCom component of this program.

Students in the Dual degree program are required to complete a major in Business Economics, Financial Economics or Business Strategy and Economic Management to meet the requirements for teaching Economics as a secondary teaching area.

Honours

After completion of the 144 UOC including all the requirements of the B Commerce component of this dual degree, high achieving students may apply for entry to the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) program to undertake honours in particular business disciplines. The BCommerce (Honours) is one year of full-time study (48 UOC) which provides students with advanced knowledge of their chosen field and develops research and communication skills. Students usually complete advanced courses/seminars and a thesis. Students interested in studying at Honours Level should refer to the BCommerce (Honours) program and plans for entry requirements.
