Program Description

The Bachelor of Construction Management and Property is a four-year full-time (or equivalent part-time) program of study which provides for students to develop the management-ready skills for specialist careers in Building, Property Development, Quantity Surveying, and Facilities Management.

The program is offered over a minimum of eight semesters, leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Construction Management and Property (BCMP). The program is structured as follows:
  • Year 1 consists of a fixed program of compulsory courses.
  • Years 2-4 consist of a mix of compulsory courses and electives drawn from a specified pool of courses, as well as open electives.
  • Year 4 also offers the possibility of a thesis, and includes general education.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire a sound foundation of knowledge in Construction Management, Property Development, Quantity Surveying, and/or Facilities Management. There is a broad emphasis on the technologies and processes of construction, and management techniques specific to the construction and property industries.

Students are required to complete a minimum of 48 uoc in electives from the list of elective options provided below. Specific electives are required to satisfy particular areas of specialisation (see section below under Areas of Specialisation), and to meet the requirements for membership of different professional bodies (see section below under Professional Recognition).

Honours

To be eligible for the award of Honours, students must successfully complete Thesis. The award of Honours is based on the overall weighted average mark (WAM), with special emphasis on the Thesis mark.

Academic Rules

1. The degree of Bachelor of Construction Management and Property is awarded at either Pass or Honours level after the successful completion of a minimum of 192 units of credit.

2. To fulfil these requirements, students must complete:
  • 144 units of core courses, being all those prescribed in the faculty regulations for this program.
  • 36 units of open electives, selected in accordance with the faculty regulations for undergraduate study in the Faculty of the Built Environment.
  • 12 units of General Education in accordance with University requirements (see below).
3. The standard duration of the program is 4 years consisting of 8 semesters of full-time study (24 units of credit per semester) plus the required work experience.

4. General Education courses may not be taken before a student enters Year 2 of the program.

Progression
In the event of failure in one or more courses, students may carry the failed course(s) provided that:
  • prerequisite courses have been completed to the satisfaction of the Program Head.
  • the total number of courses taken at any time does not exceed 6 including General Education.
  • the total contact hours do not exceed 20 per week.

Career Information

This program prepares students for professional and executive employment in the construction and property industries. Students get to tailor their educational program for a management-ready career that suits their individual goals. Careers might typically include working as a builder and/or developer, property and development consultant, on-site construction executive, overall project manager, quantity surveyor, facilities manager, building material and component researcher, and/or contract administrator.

Professional Recognition

The award of the degree, Bachelor of Building Construction Management and Property is recognised for admission to membership by:

1. The Australian Institute of Building, subject to completion of the Building area of specialisation, including 80 days of approved work experience
2. The Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, subject to completion of the Quantity Surveying area of specialisation including 6 months of approved work experience
3. The Australian Property Institute, subject to completion of the Property Development area of specialisation including 80 days of approved work experience
4. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, subject to completion of the Quantity Surveying area of specialisation including 6 months of approved work experience.
