This course introduces you to object-based design by emphasising thinking-through-making; an iterative design process that involves critical evaluation to creatively explore and generate ideas throughout the making process. Working in specialised workshops you will develop an understanding of how to manipulate materials to produce a range of design objects. You will also develop knowledge of the history and social significance of object design and craft practice, and key issues of sustainability and material ethics. The opportunity to engage with multiple workshop facilities is a unique feature of the course. Here you will acquire fundamental design skills that can be applied to specific object-based contexts such as ceramics, furniture and jewellery and more broadly to other design fields such as interior architecture, curatorial practice and exhibition design.
