Description
SART2413: Drawing and the individual is a studio based course. It examines definitions and contexts related to the 'individual' through a series of practical projects. You will use drawing as an expressive medium to investigate figurative subjects in relation to culture, identity or technology, whilst researching and reflecting upon contemporary understandings and different approaches to the concept of representing the individual. Your perception and representation of the individual in drawing practice will be actively challenged in response to such questions as, How do we understand the individual in a contemporary context? What are the possibilities of drawing as a way of creating conceptual and personal imagery that is meaningfully focused on the individual? In the process you will consider such oppositional notions as 'perceiving and the perceived', 'private and public perspectives', 'single and plural viewpoints', 'body and mind', 'self-values and the diaspora', 'the real and the virtual'.
This course relates to companion courses in the Drawing stream, which collectively provide access to an ongoing studio experience. The Drawing stream can be done in association with other Year 2 courses in preparation for more advanced studio studies in Year 3 and may also be taken as an elective where places are available.
